WWOZ is hosting six college interns this summer.  These highly motivated young people are: Ishan Allen of Antioch College; James Bullard of Ball State University; Olivia Broslawsky and Benjamin Russell of Tulane University; Candace Crawford and Lily Wasserman of Ithaca College.  Each reached out to WWOZ over the past 10 months.

The interns are acquiring hands-on experience in recording interviews, in editing,  in producing underwriting, and in public-service announcements.  On June 17,18 and 19  they attended a workshop led by Matthew Schilling, the executive director of New Orleans Youth Sound Experience (NOYSE).  The interns learned about live and in-studio sound recording and built microphones in these fun and intensive sessions.

The interns’ major project is a multimedia presentation that will derive from interviews with musicians and educators.  The presentation will explore music lovers’ perceptions of what jazz is in New Orleans.

I can't begin to tell you how wonderful it was to this year's interns spend the day with us at the New Orleans Traditional Jazz Camp on June 10, 2014. Their exuberance to learn, assist, interview, meet others and hear the music was contagious. Many of the campers became curious about what was discussed in the interviews and they started performing mini interviews of the instructors themselves. I had one intern that followed me step for step all day. That is a tough thing to do as I am always extremely busy on the Tuesday of camp. They participated in our camp's second-line and Ben even took on the bass drum!!!! Go BEN!!!!! Many thanks to the young ladies that were my right and left hands that day. After the parade was over, I enjoyed some quiet time getting to know them better. I look forward to spending more time with them over the summer. If you get a chance to meet these bright and beautiful students, do so. You will walk away a better person for it.
