'5 things to know' is a weekly feature highlighting different parts of the WWOZ world that you may have missed this week, including unique WWOZ programming and video, plus New Orleans events, artists, places, features, and more. For the week ending May 6, 2016:
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is a right of passage for many music fans across the country and it begins the very busy summer music festival season. I will be traveling the country this summer attending some of the smallest and largest music festivals around the country as well as visiting some historical music sites.
The weather's getting hot out, and the music & festival fun just gets better as the temperature increases. Check out some of the music festivals and other diversions in and around New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana this summer. And don't forget to drink lots. Of water, of water!
The Soul Queen of New Orleans, mother of four, headlines another Mother's Day celebration at the Audubon Zoo this Sunday, May 8. This is a day full of music, food, fun and family for moms and families of all ages. Ashley Sno opens, playing from 11:30-12p followed by Sweet Crude from 12:30-2p. Irma Thomas and her band, the Professionals, perform from 2:30-4p.
As part of WWOZ’s continuing effort to align staffing for the media world of 2016 and beyond, Scott Borne has been promoted to Director of Music. The semantic change from his previous title, Music Director, indicates that his duties now extend to supervision of music across all platforms, including live recordings and broadcasts, online audio and artist relations.
