1) Short week coming up! Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 24 and New Orleans will be buzzing with the smells of turkey and all the usual Thanksgiving fixin's. This writer will be at the Fairgrounds early in the day, trying to match her big $21 horse racing win from last year. If you're looking for other seasonal activities, the large Christmas tree at Washington Artillery Park (directly across Decatur from Jackson Square) was lit for the first time this year on Thursday, November 17, and will be a shining beacon of Christmas spirit each night through the holidays. This lighting marked the kickoff of St. Louis Cathedral's Christmas concert series which happens throughout November and December. The next concert will be Sunday, November 20, featuring Jean-Baptiste Monnot Titular Organist at 6p.

2) New Orleans Airlift/Music Box will be hosting Tank & the Bangas + Big Freedia at their new permanent home at 4557 N. Rampart. The show is Friday, November 18 from 6:30-10p. Check out this article from the Advocate's Keith Spera for more on the show and space.

3) Nine Times Second Line Parade is rolling out on Sunday at noon! Get the route sheet from WWOZ's Takin' It To The Streets. There's no Saints game this week so polish up those dancing shoes and hit the street.

4) We've got a new show on our airwaves! Tune in Saturdays 8-10a to hear Rockin' Ron Phillips on Weekend New Orleans. Listeners will hear a mixture of New Orleans-centric music from various genres including Trad Jazz, R&B, soul, funk, brass bands, and more each Saturday from 8-10a. Rockin' Ron will also share the events that are happening in and around the Crescent City that weekend, including major concerts, second line parades, festivals, and community events.

5) The New Orleans Jazz National Historic Park is hosting a 'Women In Jazz' series for 2016-17. On Saturday, November 19, the Women and Jazz Symposium & All Female Jazz Performance will be held at the Old U.S. Mint from 1-3p. "In New Orleans, music always acknowledged its feminine side: from the arrival of the Ursuline nuns and their choral traditions, through traveling 19th century European sopranos who amazed concert-goers, through Creole folk songs, to glorious gospel, to the blues, and to the women who made jazz great. This lecture, with ample audio and video highlights of performers, surveys three centuries of performing women and the music they made in our city. Tulane professor Carloyn Kolb is the guest presenter." The symposium will be followed by a performance from an all-female jazz band with Chloe Feoranzo on clarinet and saxophone, Marla Dixon on trumpet, Molly Reeves on guitar, Julie Schexnayder on bass, and Defne Incirlioglu on washboard.
