5 things to know for 11/11-11/17

Published on: November 11th, 2016

1) The free Treme Creole Gumbo Fest is happening Saturday and Sunday at Armstrong Park. This annual festival features some of the finest brass bands in the city along with some of the most delicious gumbo.

2) Sudan Second Line Parade is rolling this Sunday starting at noon! Get the route sheet from WWOZ's Takin' It To The Streets.

3) We've got some great live broadcasts coming up in the next 7 days! Tune in this morning (Friday, November 11) to hear a live performance from Jack Brass Band, visiting from Minneapolis and performing at the Treme Creole Gumbo Fest on Saturday. They'll play in our studio around 10a. On Wednesday, November 16 around noon, we'll welcome students from the Marion Abramson High School Brass Band in for the latest edition of Cuttin' Class. Both events can be heard on the radio and will also be video streamed on our website.

4) This week's new music spotlight focused on the amazing album and concert film released in the wake of the Dr. John tribute show at the Saenger in 2014. Just out at the end of October, The Musical Mojo of Dr. John features an all-star lineup performing with and covering songs by the Night Tripper himself.

5) Our video of the week comes from Russell Batiste & Friends performing at Jazz in the Park in 2015. Here, they cover Smokey Robinson & the Miracles 'Who's Loving You' with a young frontwoman named Shakira who can really belt it out (no, not the Colombian pop star!).
