Lydia Onimo received a grant to travel abroad to South Africa when she was 18.  She says the experience changed her life and inspired her to work harder at school and sparked an even greater passion for serving her community. That’s why this Warren Easton High School French teacher is striving to give the 9-12th grade students she teaches the same opportunity--a chance to travel abroad to Spain and France.

11 of her students were chosen for the trip through a process of obtaining recommendations from all of their teachers and remaining in good academic standing.

The total costs for the trip is approximately $43,000. The students are raising 25 percent of the costs individually. They have been able to fundraise a little over $13,000 by working at Hornets and Saints games and through the contributions of individual donors.  To reach their goal of $30,000 by April 30th,  they are looking for 1,000 donors to give at least $30 each.

Ms. Onimo is also looking into taking students to China in 2013 and completing an intensive language study. “It is my dream for as many students as possible to have this opportunity,” she says of traveling and experiencing new cultures.

Donate now to help make the 2012 Europe trip a reality for these deserving students.
