The big root beer mug has been lifted off the ground, the neon replaced and the mug is now spinning ontop a pole on Claiborne Ave. announcing a new beginning at Ted’s Frostop. Opened in 1955 and part of a tradition that dates to 1929, the Frostop is ready to rock again.

To mark this grand reopening of a New Orleans tradition, the owners are hosting a Bringing it Back Celebration on Sunday, March 4 from 2-5 p.m., featuring three bands and free root beer.

Many may associate the original location with the soda stands of the 50s and 60s and the music this weekend will reflect that. The opening act at 2 p.m. is the Bedlamville Triflers from Baton Rouge. The rockabilly trio has been influenced by the early music of Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Eddie Cochran, as well as the recent work of the Frantic Flatops and the Rev. Horton Heat. They present a mix of classic 50s rockabilly and some of their own contemporary compositions. 

The Elvis Candlelight Vigil Band will play from 3-4 p.m.

At 4 p.m. the Tricks Band will go on stage. A New Orleans based group organized in 1979, the Tricks Band plays a mix of music that begins with the 50s. Over the years the five-piece band has opened for Ricky Nelson, Chuck Berry, Irma Thomas and a host of others. For more than 20 years they traveled most of the eastern United States. 

In addition to the music, Ted’s promises free root beer and lots of old, classic automobiles. Don’t know about poodle skirts and saddle shoes, but there will be a return to the music, food and feel of the 50s and 60s.

Ted’s Frostop is located on Claiborne Ave. at Calhoun Street, lakeside of the Tulane campus.
