Satchmo SummerFest, video highlights from this week, Mardi Gras Indian Hall of Fame, National Underwear Day + more

'5 things to know' is a weekly feature highlighting different parts of the WWOZ world that you may have missed this week, including unique WWOZ programming and video, plus New Orleans events, artists, places, features, and more. For 8/5-8/11:

1) Satchmo SummerFest is happening in the French Quarter this weekend with music at Jackson Square, the Satchmo Symposium at Le Petit Theatre, "Pops' Playhouse for Kids," and more. This is a great lineup paying tribute to one of the most influential musicians in music history.

2) For the last few years, WWOZ has showcased a number of SatchmoFest performers in our studio the week leading up to the festival. This year, we were treated to great performances from Leroy Jones & New Orleans Finest, Miss Sophie Lee, and Charmaine Neville.

3) The Mardi Gras Indian Hall of Fame Week begins Sunday, August 7 with "Manchild in the City," a fine art exhibition featuring the photographs of youth participants from 0-17 years old. Other Hall of Fame Week events include a documentary preview of Hail to the Queens, Honors Breakfast, Crystal Feather Honorees Awards, and a conversation with Elder Running Deer Nelson of the White Eagles. Get all the details, including dates, times, and locations, from WWOZ's Takin' It To The Streets, your source for Mardi Gras Indian events.

4) This week's new music spotlight hit Ameal Cameron, a young Baton Rouge musician with a distinctive R&B sound. Cameron blends elements of rock, jazz, pop, and blues into his latest EP, Mended Melody.

5) National Underwear Day is Friday, August 5 and of course New Orleans is celebrating with a parade. Get out your best skivvies and meet up at Castillo Blanco Art Studios (4321 St. Claude) for the 6p start time. Marigny and Bywater residents, a mass of nearly-naked humanity is heading your way tonight.
